High Speed Fibre Optics Make Digital Signage Easy To Control
Content from a media player is displayed on one LED screen, or several LED screens of a digital signage network in digital audio-visual form. Often, content that must be regularly updated is displayed on digital signage. This updating is necessary to ensure that correct and relevant information is being displayed. The updating may be done from an in-house data source, or from a data feed from a content provider.
A method of sending information on pulses of light using an optical fibre is called fibre optic communication. Information is carried on modulated electromagnetic carrier waves formed by light. Optical fibre has a very significant advantage over copper wire because of the advantages it has over electrical transmissions. High-speed digital interfaces are now popular in video, audio and PC applications. Because of this, there is a tendency to use digital sources more. This eliminates the limitation of being tied down to a location by normal copper cables that will not be extendable than a few meters. There is a severe erosion of quality when copper cables are used, because of the limitation on bandwidth and length. In this kind of situations, fibre optic cables and extenders have a definite edge on performance.
Using technologies such as Digital Video Interactive (DVI), High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI), DisplayPort, Firewire, 3G – Serial Digital Interface (3GSDI), Universal Serial Bus (USB) and Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSEL) in high quality matrix routers, extenders and distributors, data can be transferred over long distances without compromising quality. This has a very positive impact on digital signage display on LED screens in instances where they need to be located at considerable distances away from the media player or the server.
Scheduling and playing back content can involve complex networks that incorporate multiple servers or players which enables campus-wide or enterprise-wide displays at multiple locations from a single source. Digital signage software now allows automatic creation of relevant content by servers and media players (computers) by collating real-time information (news, schedules, prices, and weather) along with audio-visual inputs to produce updated content. Often, such data has to be conveyed over long distances and displayed at different locations situated far away from each other. It is in such instances that high speed digital fibre optics plays a large role in the quick and efficient transmission of data without eroding quality of the broadcast.
