A busy Saturday in May saw huge events at the nation’s biggest sporting stadia as the UEFA Champions League Final came to Wembley whilst Twickenham hosted the final of rugby union’s Aviva Premiership.
What do these events have in common? They both featured the world’s largest mobile LED screens – ADI’s iCONIC 100s – which were located outside of the stadia to entertain arriving fans.
Wembley
At Wembley, the iCONIC 100 was positioned alongside the entrance ramp to the stadium, ready for the arrival of tens of thousands of fans for Europe’s biggest football fixture.
With tickets in huge demand, thousands were expected for the final, so UEFA transformed Olympic Way into a fanzone area designed to draw crowds throughout the day and minimise transport bottlenecks before kick-off.
The 100m² could be clearly seen by fans as they made their way along Olympic Way; its purpose was to both entertain and assist with safety and crowd control, and the screen featured content from UEFA and its commercial partners, Wembley Stadium and the Metropolitan Police, all played out from the iCONIC 100’s onboard control room.
Once the match had kicked off, ADI span the screen through 180 degrees, meaning it was facing fans as they left the stadium following the match. Post-match programming was made up of safety and travel information messages to the tens of thousands of fans interspersed with promotional content from UEFA commercial partners.
Twickenham
Meanwhile, across the capital, the Aviva Final was taking place at Twickenham’s iconic stadium. ADI were contracted by event management company Active Group to provide the high resolution iCONIC 100+ for the Village & Fan Park in the stadium car park.
With the final being shown live in HD on ESPN, the channel was broadcasting live from a temporary studio in the fanzone. ADI’s iCONIC 100 was placed directly behind the studio, with a huge printed banner on its side to promote ESPN.
In the hours leading up to the important match, tens of thousands of fans gathered to enjoy some food and drink and soak up the atmosphere. ADI’s screen was an integral part of the entertainment, showing a mixture of live broadcast from ESPN and commercial partners mixed with pre-produced video content and graphics. Active were able to mix all content from within the iCONIC 100’s onboard production suite.
Following the match thousands of fans streamed out of the stadium and the atmosphere in the fanzone picked up again. The iCONIC 100 again showed live content from the ESPN on-site studio as well as highlights from the afternoon’s match and promotional content from commercial partners, before finally being switched off at around 8.00pm.
