2019 – Bumper Summer of Sport

From F1 to Tractor Racing - What a year it's been!

We’re just over halfway through the year but 2019 has already been a bumper one for sport…

Records have been shattered in the Premier League, fans have packed out venues for the Cricket World Cup, netball has captured the attention of the nation, and Lewis Hamilton is leading the charge for the F1 championship – again.

Against a backdrop of bustling stadiums, packed out grandstands, and crowded courses, we’ve been there for many of sport’s standout moments – proudly delivering our technology to help fans and spectators get closer to the action.

Please forgive this slightly self-congratulatory post but, when you love what you do, sometimes you just have to shout about it…

As we fast approach the end of the summer now feels like a pretty good time to do just a little bit of shouting about some of the biggest sporting projects we’ve delivered so far this year…

F1 – European Grands Prix

Solution: Mobile and Modular Screens

It’s been a busy summer for our screen hire logistics team, delivering more than 60 screens to enhance the spectator experience at Grand Prix circuits all over Europe. So far, we’ve clocked up the miles working at the French, Belgian, Austrian and British Grands Prix.

The biggest of these was the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, where the team provided around 40 massive LED screens for UK racing’s flagship event.

Wigan Athletic / Wigan Warriors

Solution: Stadium LED Screen

A new 60sq.m giant high resolution LED screen will provide a platform to engage and entertain fans on matchdays at the multi-sport DW Stadium. Fans of both Wigan Athletic and Wigan Warriors will benefit from the new screen, which will provide a platform for the clubs and their sponsors to enhance the match experience.

Netball World Cup

Solution: High-Resolution 6mm digiBOARD Perimeter LED

Liverpool’s M&S Bank Arena played host to Netball’s pinnacle event in July, as 16 nations battled it out on the court for the honour of being named the best in the world.

As the world watched on, we provided the courtside perimeter LED which provided a platform for the competition’s sponsors to activate their partnerships and reach their international audiences.

Warwickshire County Cricket Club

Solution: LED Screen and Scoreboard

2019 is a massive year for Cricket in the UK and, as one of England’s tier-one venues, Edgbaston asked us to upgrade their display technology to ensure fans wouldn’t miss a second of the action.

We installed a new 10mm 34sq.m scoreboard and LED screen ahead of the Cricket World Cup – just in time to see England secure a place in the final, with a triumphant victory over Australia.

Next up, the screen is in action for The Ashes, T20 Finals, and a series of international Test Matches.

ICC Cricket World Cup Fan Zones & Opening Ceremony

Solution: Mobile LED Screens, Various Venues

Barely a summer passes us by without our giant LED screens rolling out to support fan zones at Europe’s major sporting events. Last year we had the FIFA World Cup, this year it was the Cricket World Cup.

We provided screens at various ICC World Cup grounds to welcome fans as they arrived to soak up the atmosphere for cricket’s pinnacle event. We also took over The Mall with our i25 screens in position for the opening ceremony, which took place on the doorstep of Buckingham Palace.

Royal Ascot

Solution: Mobile and Permanent LED Screens

Royal Ascot is horseracing’s most prestigious event, and we’re very proud to have been delivering our big screen technology for the event for over a decade.

This year was bigger than ever, as we delivered LED displays across the course to welcome, entertain, and inform spectators.

The biggest of the lot is out iCONIC 120 superwide LED screen which, due to its enormous scale, provides a platform to deliver live racing alongside stats, social media and sponsored content simultaneously.

Norwich City

Solution: LED Digital Ribbon

We installed football’s first revolving and rotating LED screen at Norwich City’s Carrow Road stadium back in 2016. Since then we’ve gone on to install a new perimeter digiBOARD system and, this summer, we’ve completed the installation of two new digital LED ribbons. The displays work in sync to deliver coordinated content across the stadium on a matchday, creating an incredibly powerful platform for sponsors.

The displays are particularly impressive when synchronised to create a fan-rousing pre-match show, and our production team can’t wait to launch it into action at the start of the Premier League season!

Special thanks to Ben Tunnel at Norwich City for the video

Formula E

Solution: Mobile LED Screens

Formula E might have only taken to the track in 2014 but it’s rapidly growing in popularity. We’re proud to say we’ve been there from the start – providing our big screen technology to help bring the action to life for fans in the stands. Last season was by far the biggest, as we provided dozens of screens at E-Prix events in 11 different countries.

From our colossal iCONIC 120 superwide screen to our iCONIC H, which was used by the Formula E broadcast team as an on site operations hub and TV studio , we’ve provided a wide range of solutions for Formula E this year – even a digital LED podium which tours with the event all over the world.

We’re looking forward to welcoming the E Prix back to the UK next year and can’t wait to get back out to Saudi Arabia for some winter sun ahead of the season opener in November.

London Marathon

Solution: Mobile LED Screens

For the 11th year running, our screens have been out in force, providing a platform to cheer on the tens of thousands of runners who take on the mammoth endurance challenge.  Our iCONIC 100 screen provides race information, sponsor branding, and a live race feed for runners as they wait to cross the starting line. Other screens flank the 26+ mile course, entertaining spectators and greeting the finishers as they cross the line.

Goodwood Racecourse

Solution: 60sq.m Rotating Epoch LED Screen

We’ve worked with Goodwood for over a decade – delivering mobile LED screen solutions for the course’s major racing events. Realising the need to install a permanent screen at the finishing post, Goodwood asked us to help with their unique set of challenges.

Anyone who’s ever been to Goodwood won’t be surprised to learn it’s in an area of outstanding natural beauty, which means extra consideration must be made when installing any new display technology.

The solution: a unique Epoch LED screen which has the ability to rotate 360º and, crucially, raise up and down on a mast so it can be lowered from sight when not in use.

The screen’s next outing will be the Qatar Goodwood Festival, which welcomes over 100,000 racegoers over the course of the event.

MLB Fan Zone

Solution: Mobile LED Screens

In June, MLB giants New York Yankees and Boston Redsocks, came to London to play their first ever European series. Expectations were high and interest in the game was enormous, attracting around 120,000 fans across the two days.

Our screens were on hand to welcome those spectators to the fan park, working with MLB to introduce new fans to the game and enhance the experience for seasoned followers of this great American pastime.

Tractor Pulling Championships

Solution: Mobile LED Screens

This event doesn’t actually take place until late August but how could we post a  roundup of the sports events we’re delivering without including one that describes itself as ‘The World’s Most Powerful Motorsport’?

For the uninitiated, think of it as a kind of drag racing meets farming, fun-filled, family day out. Some pretty epic tractors, weighing up to 4.5 tonnes, compete in an adrenaline/diesel fuelled assault on the senses. We’ll be there to see these 9,000 horsepower heavyweights in action… and we can’t wait!

Watch this Space…

What a year of sport 2019 has already been – and we still have five months to go! We’re going to be pretty busy in those remaining months (and not just with Tractor Pulling! events), as we’ve got a few pretty big projects we’ll be able to announce very soon…
