40th edition of the Great North Run features enhanced ADI solution

New route, race format and additional ADI services

Tens of thousands of runners took part in last weekend’s GNR, which celebrated both its 40th anniversary and the event’s return after 2020’s covid cancellation. In addition to a new route – beginning and ending in Newcastle – the GNR featured a staggered start to ease social distancing, and also utilised more of ADI’s iCONIC event screens and sports presentation services than ever before.

long-term event partner

As an event delivery partner to the GNR since 2001, ADI have a deep understanding of the world’s most popular half marathon; knowing where our products and services can add value, and evolving both the runner and spectator experience year on year.

Our large mobile LED screens are fundamental to mass communications and crowd management across the event, and for 2021 we added the unique iCONIC 60 Stage at the half way point to keep passing runners motivated with live music and presenters. The super-sized iCONIC 120 also provided a high-impact display for the promotion of upcoming Great Run events alongside a live event feed, with this huge screen supporting two 16:9 content zones.

sports presentation

As part of the sports presentation service, we produced live programming across all the iCONIC screens, with ADI’s event broadcast team managing multiple camera feeds and sub-mixes. As part of our 21-person crew we provided 5 camera operators, who were located at the start and finish lines to capture the crowds, while a roaming RF camera covered the wider event site to interview runners and spectators.

We also used the skills of our remote Editors, who transformed static GNR and headline partner branding into unique animated videos for use across all event screens.
