ADI’s Underwater Spectacular Now Showing on Printwork’s Digital Ceiling

The launch of Carmen, The Opera, as it's never been seen before

A brand new visual spectacular, shot and produced by ADI, has launched at Manchester’s Printworks (June 6th). An underwater version of the famous opera, Carmen, is now showing on the largest digital ceiling in Europe

Headlining a wider underwater theme that will run throughout June, the timeless story of love, lust, betrayal and death was shot in a special water tank with highly trained actors who are used to performing underwater.

The 200 year old opera has been given a modern twist with a reworking of the classic Habanera track which is highly recognisable. Recorded by London-based artist Claudillea, it fuses the timeless operatic beauty of the original song with modern, glitchy dubstep bass and rhythms, creating the perfect dramatic and high-impact accompaniment to the film, suited to Printworks’ contemporary style.

Shot underwater over two days, the final piece of film is stunning to watch. The actors are wearing flamboyant costumes and a combination of props including silk scarves, playing cards and fresh roses were also captured on camera underwater to fully tell the tale of the opera in just four minutes.

The piece was conceptualised, planned, edited and directed by ADI, who also designed and installed the 1,000m2 digital ceiling inside Printworks where the short film can be viewed.

We always wanted to shoot something underwater as we had a vision of visitors staring upwards and imagining themselves under a giant expanse of water. Dancing underwater means that there is a slow pace which works wonderfully with the trailing silk sheets and costumes. The resulting film is graceful and ethereal but also dramatic and emotive. We really hope visitors love watching this piece as much as we enjoyed creating it.”

Marketing Manager for Printworks, Kristian Brennan, said: “Since our relaunch in April we have been pushing the boundaries on free entertainment for the whole family in Manchester. Our version of Carmen is the latest content to launch and it is simply stunning. There is nowhere else in the world where anything like this can be seen and it demonstrates our commitment to creating a whole new world of entertainment here at Printworks.”

Carmen at Printworks is showing every day in June from Thursday 6 starting at 12 noon and then repeating on the hour.

The wider series of underwater themed content also features a whale and its calf, super cute puffer fish and relaxing wave effects.
