As a business we pride ourselves on being able to deliver a complete ‘end to end’ solution. But lots of people in this industry claim to do the same, and what does that actually mean?
For us, it means being involved from the inception of an idea and seeing the project right through to completion. That involves helping our clients realise their vision and evolving initial concepts into something tangible, providing insight and opinion on what we think will work, and what definitely won’t.
If we can take ownership of an entire project then we will and our customers only see this as a positive thing – it means they only need to communicate with a single point of contact throughout the whole process. There’s no chance of miscommunication between suppliers or with the client, the buck stops with us!
When it comes to large-scale LED installations, like those in stadia or retail destinations, our remit is often much wider. New regulations were brought in recently that mean a Principal Designer must be appointed to manage the health and safety of both pre-construction and construction phases for any projects with more than one contractor, and if not all liabilities fall to the client.
Unfortunately, it’s not just a box-ticking exercise, the CDM (Construction Design Management) regulations mean that projects must have the right management or it could be catastrophic. There are a number of roles to be fulfilled when delivering big infrastructure projects – from Principal Designer, Principal Contractor, manufacturer and integrator. By assuming responsibility for every element, we are able to offer a better service, it’s as simple as that. With fewer links in the supply chain there are naturally fewer points of failure. Ultimately that means delivering a more successful project.
ATTENTION TO DETAIL
The forward-thinking commercial and operational teams at Watford FC engaged with ADI early on, and whilst the club had a desire to install new stadium screens, there were questions over the best size and location of the displays in order to drive most value from their investment. This, coupled with the fact that Vicarage Road is nearly a century old, posed a whole host of challenges.
The process for installation – and even getting the 10 ton LED screens into the stadium – threw up questions that needed serious consideration. In order to navigate the challenges and devise a workable solution Watford appointed ADI to undertake a Detailed Design Study (DDS).
A DDS is a methodical feasibility analysis of a proposed installation, and it’s undertaken by our project management team. It determines how – and if – a project can proceed. In this instance, the DDS allowed us to specify a range of options to the club, together with an assessment of the installation methods and how they could impact on club operations.
The feasibility study was vital in allowing us to choose the best installation method that could be achieved during the short window of the summer break, before the Premier League season kicked-off again. Another key consideration was not disrupting other operations and stadium improvements taking place, or setting foot on the pitch!
Thinking Outside the Box – and above the stadium
Given the fact that driving any kind of plant or machinery over the ‘hallowed turf’ wasn’t an option we devised an innovative alternative. We brought in an enormous 85 metre tall mobile crane capable of lifting the two 10 ton LED screens above residential streets and over the stadium, before lowering them into place on top of the newly reinforced roof.
Manoeuvring a 96 ton crane into place takes planning. We liaised with the club, local authorities and residents in order to temporarily close minor roads and deliver the solution while ensuring minimal disruption to the surrounding communities and minimising traffic congestion.
Because we assumed responsibility for the project by undertaking both Principle Design and Principle Contractor roles, we were able to retain control and manage every element of the installation. We used our knowledge and experience to assume these roles confidently while providing cost efficiencies and saving time for the client – with the project crucially delivered to deadline and to budget.
